Flood Disaster Assistance Needed for Tioga County

The Tioga Outreach Center of Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga and Neighborhood Legal Services are providing flood disaster assistance to Tioga County residents at the Flood Disaster Services Center in Owego.

The Flood Disaster Services Center, located in the Owego-Apalachin Middle School, is coordinated by New York State and will be open 8AM-8PM through Monday, July 17. Participating agencies in addition to Catholic Charities and Neighborhood Legal Services: FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), SBA (U.S. Small Business Administration), New York State Department of Health, New York State Department of Labor, New York State Office of Children and Families, New York State Office of Mental Health, Tioga County Department of Social Services.

Since the Center opened on Friday, July 8, Catholic Charities has provided more than $3000 in aid to flooded families and individuals. Legal Services has provided advice and counsel on small claims issues, landlord-tenant issues, and consumer problems.

Flood victims shared stories of loss and need with representatives of Catholic Charities and Neighborhood Legal Services. For example:

  • A Town of Barton family with two pre-school age children had an unanticipated $250 motel bill because they had to evacuate their home and had no where to go for several days.
  • A parent lost his car to the flood waters and now has added expenses for transportation to his job in Endicott each day.
  • Renters shared concerns about an absent landlord who is not responding to damages caused by the flood.
  • One persons wheelchair floated away in the flood waters.

Please help those that are dealing with the aftermath of this flood. Monetary donations and/or gift cards for stores for Tioga County flood relief, made out to Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga, can be sent to:

Catholic Charities Tioga Outreach Center
505 Clark Street
Waverly, New York 14892

or dropped off at our Ithaca office:

324 West Buffalo St.
Ithaca, NY 14850

For more information, call Tioga Outreach Center at 565-7580.
