United Way Gulf Recovery Fund
The United Way Gulf Recovery Fund will provide emergency assistance and long-term recovery support for the people and communities devastated by this oil spill.
Human Need
- The oil spill has created major disruption in the lives of people in the Gulf Coast areas, even as they still struggle to recover from the 2005 hurricanes.
- United Way's 2-1-1 help line reports a dramatic spike in calls. They're inundated with requests by people who need help and by those who want to volunteer.
- To date, thousands of families need help with food, clothing, utility assistance, rent and mortgage relief, and access to health and mental health care.
- The need is now. The impact on lives is enormous. People can't wait for access to food, shelter and clothing.
- Long after the immediate response, there will be ongoing educational, financial and health-related challenges.
